Village of Ojen

Pueblos blancos are the whitewashed villages and towns that sprinkle the countryside of Andalusian. Tourists have found most of these villages but there are still a few that remain small and peaceful. Visit three of the charming villages that are about an hour's drive from Malaga.

Istán

The road to Istan winds and twists and goes nowhere but to the village. The best way to see the village is to walk. In the center is a blue and white tiled fountain with seven spouts that have filled water jugs for hundreds of years. The porticoed area to the left of the fountain is where village women washed their family's clothes. Also in the center of town is the baroque church of San Miguel, built in 1505. Tajo Banderas, Las Herrizas, Azufaifo and El Peñón are overlooks with breathtaking views that are not to be missed. Istan is 47 miles from Malaga.

Monda

You can't miss the castle built on the ruins of an ancient Arabic fortress that houses a hotel and restaurant. The winding streets of Monda were designed for donkeys, not cars, and they will still be seen as farmers lead them through the village on their way to fields and orchards. There are no polluting industries in Monda and the village is much as it has been for centuries, clean, quiet, and beautiful. This little village with it's captivating scenery is 27 miles from Malaga. Ojén

Stop at the viewing area before entering the town of Ojen for breathtaking views of the town, the ocean, and the mountains. Cobbled streets and whitewashed houses of this traditional Spanish village cling to the mountainsides surrounded by orchards. Just 40 miles from Malaga, Ojen lies in the mountains of the Sierra de las Nieves Nature Park and is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Andalusia.

Each of these villages has a long history and a small population. The locals are friendly, the food is good, and each village is world away from the city.
